INTRODUCTION

Established in 2005, Fairtrade Africa is the independent non-profit umbrella organization representing all Fairtrade certified producers in Africa. Fairtrade Africa is owned by its members, who are African producer organizations certified against international Fairtrade standards producing traditional export commodities such as coffee, cocoa, tea, cotton, bananas, mango, and non-traditional commodities including shea butter and rooibos tea. Currently, the organization represents over 1.18 million smallholder farmers and workers across 28 countries in Africa.

ABOUT RECOVER AFRICA PROJECT

To mitigate the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Fair Trade producers’ health, well-being and economic sustainability, this project on RECOVER AFRICA: A COVID-19 Fairtrade Emergency Initiative, funded by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), is implemented by Fairtrade Africa from October 2020 to April 2022. The project aims to provide immediate relief to and support the prevention of the further spread of the COVID-19 pandemic on at-risk producers in nine countries in Africa (Kenya, Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Madagascar, Malawi and South Africa); as well as help producers recover from economic losses due to COVID-19, maintain and diversify their supply chain relations, and ensure business continuity, food security
and income generation for their member -– thereby building producers’ resilience to future shocks and stresses.

SCOPE OF THE ASSIGNMENT

FTA is seeking the services of a professional photographer in Rwanda who will assist the organisation to document the participants, results, learning and success stories through quality photography.

The photographer is required to produce a package of photographs to illustrate the various interventions undertaken by the project and how that it has impacted the lives of producers and farmers and the communities in general. The photographs should tell a story that depicts the role of Fairtrade Africa and the projects in various relief and emergency interventions during the COVID-19 pandemic. Most importantly, the photographs should highlight the impact of the project in terms of its contributions to building the resilience of Fairtrade producers beyond the pandemic. The photographs should highlight the progress of the project by illustrating BEFORE and AFTER images whenever possible. It will be important to document how individual lives are affected by the project. To do this, the photographer has to gather photos and stories behind the photos and identifying key communications people that can support these efforts. For the photos, it will be important to collect a variety of shot types – e.g. extreme closeups,close-ups, mid-shot, long shot, staged shots, and action shots. In addition to a variety of shot types, it would be important to gather photos that showcase people (especially if they have provided a quote), process/es, technological innovation, working experience with local communities are highly desirable in this consultancy.

The photos will include the following data:

• Location (where): Name the place, community and country where the
the picture was made.

• Date (when): Provide the date the photo was made using the format
YYYY-MM-DD

• Description: What is occurring –the action –in the photo? Or what are we
seeing? Explain the purpose or reason why this is occurring, the context
if you will.

• People: Who is in the photograph? Try to get at least people’s names and
age. If more than one person in images write their names the following
way: “From left to right: Moses, Fatuma, Peter and John.” If there are
more than 2 people, you can also specify the group.

The photographer will obtain the relevant written consent for photographs usage from
concerned people/authorities.

EXPECTED OUTPUTS (Deliverables)

1-2-page Shortlist – Before going to the field, it would be ideal if the photographer could share and refine the shortlist (i.e. the basic list of shots detailing the ideal shots that the photographer would want to capture with photos) and provide initial ideas on the storyline for the photographic documentary. This would allow the project team to add or highlight additional images that may be good to capture. A sample working draft and project backgrounds will be provided.

Provide Fairtrade Africa with at least 300 high-resolution photographs (both raw and processed) and few appropriate video stills in external drives from all the projects. The project team will conduct a photo review after each field trip
undertaken by the photographer.

Provide Fairtrade Africa with a package of visual materials for use across different platforms for each of the three projects.

RIGHTS TO OWNERSHIP OF THE PHOTOGRAPHS TAKEN

Rights in all the images taken and prepared by the photographer under this contract are to be owned by the FTA. These photographs, digital or printed both shall not be transferred to anyone outside FTA whether free of charge or at cost.
The photographs remain the property of FTA, even after the completion of the contract.

DURATION OF ASSIGNMENT, DUTY STATION AND EXPECTED PLACES OF TRAVEL

The consultancy work will be 25 days, including visits to the various project sites.
Fairtrade Africa will determine the exact travel dates for the field visits in consultation with the respective Project Managers and based on the photographer’s expertise.

DESIRED EXPERIENCE/EXPERTISE

FTA is looking for an individual with the following qualifications:

• Demonstrated expertise in photography with at least 5 years of relevant
working experience in professional photography in a similar field;
• Outstanding photo editing skills
• Good written communication skills in English and experience in script
writing
• Availability and willingness to travel to the project sites
• High level of creativity and initiative

Important Note: FTA WILL NOT PROVIDE EQUIPMENT for this assignment.
The photographer is responsible for arranging his/her own high-resolution state
of the art digital camera/equipment.

• Brief description of the approach to work/technical proposal of why the individual
considers him/herself as the most suitable for the assignment, and a proposed
methodology on how you will approach and complete the assignment; (max 1)page)
• Financial Proposal that indicates the all-inclusive fixed total contract price and
all other travel-related costs (such as professional fees, transportation,
communications, etc.), supported by a breakdown of costs.
