Scholarships are available to Canadian and International students. Simon Fraser University 2023 (SFU) is a public research university in British Columbia, Canada, with three campuses: Burnaby (main campus), Surrey, and Vancouver. Undergraduate and graduate programs at SFU operate on a year-round, three-semester schedule.

The university enrolled 4,701 graduate students in the Fall 2021 semester, with international students constituting 32% of the graduate student population.In 2017, Simon Fraser University received a sponsored research income (external sources of research funds) of C$138.964 million, the 17th highest in Canada. In the same year, the university’s faculty averaged a sponsored research income of $156,300, while graduates averaged $30,900.

Open Scholarship

The Undergraduate Open Scholarship recognizes and supports undergraduate students who are highly qualified academically and awards scholarships to students on a term by term basis.  No application is required; students who meet eligibility criteria are considered for the Open Scholarship automatically.

Awards are given in recognition of distinguished intellectual, cultural, social, or athletic achievements or contributions to the community.  Awards are available to Canadian and International students.

SFU Service Awards

Every year, Financial Aid and Awards accepts applications for the SFU Service Awards. The SFU Service Awards recognize outstanding unpaid service to the University community and/or the community at large, leadership and volunteer work. These awards are available to SFU undergraduate students, but the B.C. Sugar Achievement Award is also available to SFU Faculty members.

Bursaries

Bursaries are a supplemental source of funding for students with demonstrated financial need; that is, they should not be treated as your primary source of funding.

Bursaries are available to Canadian and International students.  You should be aware that you may not be awarded a bursary every term.

Work-Study program

The Work-Study Program is an opportunity to participate in research-based projects and earn a supplemental income. You will also gain valuable experience connecting with various members of the SFU community and build your co-curriculum record. Because a student’s first commitment is to his/her studies, Work-Study hours are flexible, on campus and supervised.

Eligibility requirements Simon Fraser University

To apply for a scholarships you must:

  • have completed at least 12 units of standard graded courses
    at SFU.
  • be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units of standard graded courses at SFU in the term of application.
  • have a minimum CGPA of 3.50 at SFU

Please note that 3 Unit Co-op is not a standard graded course. Challenge, audit and credit-free courses are not considered.

A student with a disability is eligible to apply for scholarships if the student is enrolled in a minimum of 6 or more units of standard graded courses and meets all other eligibility requirements. At the time of application, the student has to provide a letter from SFU’s Centre for Accessible Learning (CAL) confirming that the student is registered with the Centre (CAL).

  • A student holding an SFU entrance award is eligible to apply for all other University administered scholarships.
  • A student holding an SFU entrance scholarship is not eligible for any other University administered scholarship until the entrance scholarship is fully paid out. This policy applies to any term in which an entrance scholarship is deferred.

Some financial aid is specifically available for Indigenous students only. Indigenous can be contextualized as “Indigenous peoples of Canada” to refer specifically to First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples.

How to Apply for Simon Fraser University

The Summer 2022 application will open May 2, 2022.
  • Check the application period and final deadline at Application Deadlines.
  • Review the Summer 2022 Scholarship and Awards List to determine which scholarships/awards you want to apply for.
  • Apply online by logging in to the Student Information System (go.sfu.ca).
  • Click on “Student Center”.
  • Go to Financial Aid and Awards (under Finances).
  • Click on “Apply for Scholarships/Awards”.
  • List the scholarships/awards you want to apply for on your online application.
  • Complete and submit your application.
  • Set up Direct Deposit (administered through the Student Accounts Office) as soon as possible, to receive any refunds you may be eligible to receive.

The SFU Employee Tuition Waiver and the SFU Undergraduate Open Scholarship specifically indicate support for your tuition fees at SFU. You can receive funding from both up to the cost of your tuition. The SFU Undergraduate Open Scholarship is applied to your Student Account first, in week 3 of the term. The Open Undergraduate Scholarship funding does not cover the full amount of your tuition. Therefore, the SFU Employee Tuition Waiver will be applied after (usually in week 5 from start of classes), and will cover the remainder of your outstanding tuition fees.

For example, if your tuition is $2500 and you receive the Open Scholarship for $1200, the SFU Employee Tuition Waiver will cover the remaining $1300.
