Small Mammal Conservation Organsation Post Graduate Fellowship for African Fellows 2024 (Deadline 25 January, 2024)
The West Africa Mammal Partnership (WAMP) and Fellowship (WAMF) programs were set up to bridge these gaps through multiple pathways that together bend the curve for biodiversity loss in the regions, thereby safeguarding a future for small mammals in West Africa. The program is firmly committed to the principle of generating and relying on conservation evidence to drive effective intervention efforts. The Mammal Partnership is a multi-regional and international collaboration between institutions and universities.
In addition, regional in-country partners recruit and collaboratively supervise fellows under existing projects. Support for fellows is through a collaboration between local and international partners (WAMP). Thus, fellows receive support from both in-country and international mentors. In addition to mentorship, the program provides training on hands-on field techniques, refresher on specialized topics in ecology, and skills such as GIS, statistics, and molecular techniques. Furthermore, fellows receive a mini-grant and access to equipment.
This program aims to strengthen the capacity of small mammal research and conservation skills of West African postgraduate students achievable through the two stages: (1) A classroom & field course (2) Mentorship program
About Small Mammal Conservation Organsation (SMACON)
Mammals and their habitat face immense threat from anthropogenic pressures especially habitat destruction and bushmeat hunting. An overwhelming conservation focus on so-called “charismatic megafauna” translates to limited protections for small and medium-sized mammals including bats, rodents, pangolins etc. Across the tropics, a major challenge in mammal conservation stems from lack of local expertise, dearth of ecological evidence and government support. Requirements for Post Graduate Fellowship Qualification
- Applicants must be admitted to or enrolled into a post graduate program in a West African University.
- Applicant’s supervisor must be one of the partners of the West Africa Mammal Partnership
- Applicants must be keen on small mammal research and conservation.
- Intended Research for Postgraduate student must be conducted in West Africa and based on Small mammal studies and conservation.
- Applicant must be available to attend a 2-week intensive field course.

Selected applicants will be contacted for an all-expense paid 2 weeks field course. - All applicants are to submit carefully designed project proposals 2 weeks post-field course.
- Approved projects will be notified, and owners awarded fellowships.
- Fellows will be assigned mentors and become eligible for all associating fellowship benefits.
