Mission and objectives

Guided by the 2030 Agenda principle of “leaving no one behind”, UNICEF Rwanda under the current country programme will contribute to five priorities under the social transformation pillar of the National Strategy for Transformation 2017–2024: (a) Ensuring access to quality health for all; (b) Reducing malnutrition; (c) Ensuring access to and improving the quality of education; (d) Moving towards a modern Rwandan household, and; (e) Enhancing graduation from poverty and promoting resilience. The country programme will be implemented as part of the United Nations Development Assistance Plan 2018–2023 (UNDAP II), specifically contributing to Strategic Result Area 2: Social Transformation.

Context

UNICEF Rwanda works on a wide range of issues and engages with a varied set of partners, from Government and other UN Agencies, to diplomats, private sector, NGOs, faith-based organizations, and others. The Representative has the overall responsibility for leading the UNICEF team in Rwanda as well as engaging in regional and global projects within UNICEF. UNICEF Rwanda includes approximately 80 staff members in the Kigali office.

Task description

Under the direct supervision of the Representative, the UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks: • Researches and prepares materials, talking points, speech drafts or presentations and proposals on a variety of matters for key internal or external audiences. • Drafts and edits various documents including internal/external correspondence. Creates and maintains files, reviews drafts and finished documents for accuracy and grammar. • Coordinates with the Executive Assistant to the Representative to manage the Front Office, including taking minutes in Senior Management Team meetings and following up on agreed tasks. • Assumes responsibility, in the Representative’s absence, for ensuring requests for action or information, which would normally receive the Representative’s attention are made known to responsible managers or personnel who can satisfy the request. Monitors resulting activity for purposes of briefing the Representative. Monitors the generic RCO email account for this purpose. • Prepare background info for upcoming meetings, including field trips, often using inputs provided by other parts of the office. • Prepares the Briefing Book and itinerary for all VIP visits, in consultation with the Representative and relevant staff members. • Manages internal and external special projects in coordination with other parts of the office and/or organizations on behalf of the Representative. • Keeps abreast of Representative’s immediate and long-term commitments and plans; identifies conflicts, flags problems for intervention and corrects course as appropriate. • Supports other team members, particularly Senior Management Team members, as necessary. • Oversees special projects assigned by the Representative. Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to: • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark International Volunteer Day); • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country; • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities; • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.; • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly arrived UN Volunteers; • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible

Nationality

Candidate must be a national or legal resident of the country of assignment.

Requirements

Required experience

3 years of experience in • working experience, ideally in an office setting. • Fluency in English; French and/or local language an asset. • Excellent English writing skills are required. • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, to meet deadlines, and to take initiative to troubleshoot and solve problems before they arise. * Computer skills: Word, Excel, PowerPoint
