The TWAS Visiting Expert Programme, run by the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), enables research institutions in developing countries—especially those with limited global connections—to invite internationally recognized scientists (excluding mathematics and physics fields) for short-term exchanges. These visits are designed to bolster research capacity, ignite collaboration, and mentor faculty and students.(Twas)

Programme Highlights & Requirements

  • Host Institutions: Research groups or universities in developing countries, particularly Least Developed Countries (LDCs).(Twas)
  • Visiting Experts: Must hold a PhD and have international recognition in their respective scientific fields. Nominations of women are particularly encouraged.(Twas)
  • Scope: All natural science fields except mathematics and physics. For those fields, TWAS directs applicants to its ICTP Visiting Scholar/Consultant Programme.(Twas)
  • Visit Duration: Minimum of 2 weeks, maximum of 4 weeks.(Twas)
  • Support Provided:
    • TWAS covers round-trip economy-class transport for the Visiting Expert.
    • The host institution covers local expenses (e.g., lodging, meals).(Twas)
  • Post-visit Reporting: Both parties must submit detailed reports on the visit’s impact on education, research, and future collaboration.(Twas)

  • How to Apply:
    1. The host institution initiates the application via TWAS’s online portal (“Apply Now” button).
    2. Required documentation includes:
      • The Visiting Expert’s CV (max 10 pages) and publications list.
      • letter from the Visiting Expert outlining the proposed research and teaching programme.
      • statement from the head of the host institution in support of the visit.(Twas)
    3. Application submission is limited—only one TWAS or OWSD programme per calendar year per applicant is allowed.(Twas)
