Background & Job Description

Disclaimer: I am not affiliated with UNAIDS. I am only advertising this opportunity for informational purposes on my website.

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) is offering internship opportunities for 2025. This competitive and globally respected programme gives students and recent graduates a platform to contribute to the global response to HIV and AIDS while gaining valuable professional experience inside the UN system.

UNAIDS is a joint UN initiative that brings together the efforts of 11 UN organizations, including WHO, UNDP, UNICEF, and the World Bank. Its mission is to lead the global fight to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030, focusing on three core objectives: zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths.

The internship placements are designed for individuals with a passion for public health, international development, social justice, or global policy. Whether placed in Geneva or remotely, interns are exposed to the operations of a major international institution, allowing them to build career-relevant skills in a multicultural, multilingual work environment.

Although internships at UNAIDS are typically unpaid, a financial stipend may be offered to candidates who do not receive support from other sources. This makes it a rare opportunity for individuals from diverse backgrounds to access international UN experience.

Tasks

Interns will support a variety of technical and operational projects depending on the department to which they are assigned. Key responsibilities may include:

    • Assisting in the preparation of reports, presentations, research briefs, and internal documents.

    • Supporting programmatic work in areas such as advocacy, policy, communications, health economics, public health, monitoring and evaluation, or administration.

    • Participating in virtual or in-person meetings and drafting meeting summaries.

    • Assisting in data analysis and presentation of findings to internal teams or partners.

    • Contributing to the design and execution of communication campaigns.

      Buy vitamins and supplements
    • Supporting the organization of events, webinars, or consultations.

  • Helping coordinate collaboration across departments and with external stakeholders.

  • Carrying out ad hoc administrative tasks as needed by the supervisor or hosting division.

The internship provides a hands-on learning experience in an international environment focused on collaboration, innovation, and impact. Interns are integrated into their teams and are encouraged to take initiative and apply their academic knowledge to real-world problems.

To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 20 years of age at the time of application.

  • Be currently enrolled in a university programme (undergraduate, graduate, or postgraduate) or have completed a program within the past 12 months.

    Buy vitamins and supplements
  • Have strong academic performance and evidence of motivation to pursue a career in global health or international development.

  • Have a working knowledge of at least one of UNAIDS’ official languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, or Chinese.

Experience

    • Previous internship, volunteer, or research experience in public health, HIV/AIDS, global development, or the humanitarian sector is advantageous but not required.

    • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in multicultural teams.

    • Strong communication, research, and writing skills are highly valued.

    • Familiarity with Microsoft Office tools and digital communication platforms (e.g., Zoom, Teams) is preferred.

    • Applicants should not have previously participated in the UNAIDS Internship Programme.

  • Applicants must not have immediate family members (e.g., parents, siblings) working for UNAIDS.

UNAIDS is committed to ensuring diversity in its workforce and strongly encourages applications from women, people living with HIV, people with disabilities, and individuals from low- and middle-income countries.

Additional Information

  • Internship Duration: Internships typically last between two and six months, depending on the needs of the hosting division and the intern’s availability.

  • Work Location: Internships may be conducted in-person at UNAIDS offices or remotely.

  • Stipend: A modest stipend may be provided to candidates who do not have external funding, to help cover basic living expenses during the internship.

  • Diversity and Inclusion: UNAIDS prioritizes inclusion and gender equality. Applications from underrepresented communities and people from the Global South are highly encouraged.

  • Deadline: All applications must be submitted by 30 August 2025 through the official UNAIDS e-Recruitment platform.

  • Application Process: Candidates must submit a complete application, including a cover letter and updated CV, through the UNAIDS e-Recruitment portal. Shortlisted candidates may be contacted for a brief interview or further documentation.

This internship is an excellent opportunity for early-career professionals to gain exposure to international public health work and develop a strong foundation in global advocacy, policy development, and health systems. Interns who complete the programme successfully often go on to pursue careers with the UN, international NGOs, or public sector institutions.

If you are passionate about social impact, global justice, and ending the AIDS epidemic, this is your opportunity to join a global movement and build your international career. Apply now to begin your journey with UNAIDS in 2025.
