The UNDP implemented Global Environment Facility’s Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP) in Rwanda is pleased to announce a call for proposals for its Plastic Waste Management and Behavior Change and capacity development project.

The deadline for submission of applications is 09/09/2022.

About the GEF SGP

The GEF Small Grants Programme (SGP) is a corporate programme of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) since 1992. SGP grant-making in over 125 countries promotes community-based innovation, capacity development, and empowerment through sustainable development projects of communities’ local civil society organizations with special consideration for indigenous peoples, women, and youth.

SGP projects support biodiversity conservation, climate change mitigation and adaptation, prevention of land degradation, protection of international waters, and reduction of the impact of chemicals, within a sustainable development framework that promotes sustainable livelihoods and citizen empowerment. In its 7th Operational Phase (OP7), the GEF SGP has the following aims: “to promote and support innovative, inclusive and scalable initiatives, and foster multi stakeholder partnerships at the local level to tackle global environmental issues in priority landscapes and seascapes”

One of the key strategic initiatives is on Chemical and Waste Management as well as promoting Sustainable Urban Solutions, including plastics management. SGP is working closely with the concerned GEF Secretariat team, UNDP Plastic Offer, and other partners on the issue.

Funding

• The requested grant amount should not exceed 150,000 USD.
• The applicant organization should be able to contribute (in cash and/or in kind) for at least
50% of the total project cost.
• The approved grant amount shall be disbursed in 3 installments:
* an up-front payment to initiate the project (50%)
* a second payment upon receipt of a satisfactory 1st progress report (40%)
*a final payment on receipt of a satisfactory 2nd progress report (10%)

Eligibility Criteria

• be recognized as a lead research, education and training institute, university or research center
• members of the organizations demonstrate expertise and experience on plastics and waste management
• understanding of global plastic pollution crisis, and ability to present and showcase
Rwanda model through well-developed training and communications materials
• have a track record of behavior change research and application
• demonstration of prior experiences of working with international partners, and experiences
of hosting organization and hosting of international conferences are highly desirable
• strong administrative, operations and logistics support
• excellent communications, coordination, and international cooperation skills
• respect for diverse culture and backgrounds

members of the organization are proficient in English
