About the Junior Fellows Internship Programme

The UNU Junior Fellows Internship Programme at the Office of the Rector in Tokyo provides a dynamic and enriching experience for young professionals and graduate students who are passionate about international relations, research, and policy development.

This internship emphasizes professional training, mentorship, and hands-on experience, offering valuable exposure to the inner workings of the United Nations system and UNU’s global academic operations.

Internship Duration and Location

  • Location: United Nations University Headquarters, Tokyo, Japan

  • Duration: Approximately 6 months (24 weeks)

  • Term: Spring 2026

  • Start Date: 2 March 2026

  • End Date: 28 August 2026

  • Application Deadline: 31 October 2025 (11:59 PM Japan Standard Time)

For the Spring 2026 term, applications are open to candidates residing both in Japan and overseas.

Internship Responsibilities

Selected Junior Fellows will work closely with the Office of the Rector team and gain experience in several functional areas. Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting administrative research and preparing executive briefs and policy papers

  • Supporting project management, data analysis, and internal reporting

  • Assisting with the coordination of academic events, workshops, and conferences

  • Providing editorial and communication support, including proofreading and content drafting

  • Preparing newsletters, event summaries, and communication documents

  • Assisting in meeting logistics and maintaining organizational systems

This position provides exposure to international policy formulation, institutional management, and academic coordination within a UN framework.Stipend and Benefits

Stipend and Benefits

Interns not receiving external financial assistance (such as from a university or institution) will receive a monthly stipend from UNU to partially cover basic living expenses in Tokyo.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the UNU Junior Fellows Internship Programme 2026, applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Currently enrolled in or have recently completed (within two years) postgraduate studies (Master’s or PhD)

  • Under 32 years of age at the time of application

  • Have no more than five years of work experience in a relevant field

  • Demonstrate excellent English communication skills (written and spoken)

  • Possess strong research, analytical, and computer skills (MS Office proficiency required)

  • Show a demonstrated interest in the mission and work of the United Nations and UNU

Applicants whose academic programs were not conducted in English must provide a valid TOEFL, IELTS, or TOEIC score report.

 

Application Process

The application process is conducted in three stages:

Stage 1: Submission

Applicants must submit the following documents via the official UNU application portal:

  • Updated Curriculum Vitae (maximum two pages)

  • Cover Letter (one page) explaining motivation, qualifications, and career goals

  • Completed Application Form and Funding Form

  • Two Letters of Recommendation (sent directly by referees to ro_internship@unu.edu)

  • English Language Certificate (if applicable)

Stage 2: Interview

Shortlisted applicants will be invited for an interview via Zoom or telephone to discuss their motivations, skills, and suitability for the position.

Stage 3: Written Assignment

Candidates will complete a short written task related to the internship work. The assignment will be conducted on the same day as the interview.

Successful applicants will receive an Agreement Form, which serves as a working contract for the duration of the internship. Those requiring visas will begin their application process upon acceptance.
