Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship 2025 for International Students:

Applications are invited to apply for the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship 2025 in Singapore. All International applicants can apply for these fellowship programs in Singapore. All fellows will travel to Singapore, and the ISEAS will pay for their expenses. Following their fellowship, researchers are welcome to contribute to ISEAS and will be a part of a network of regional academics as WGWVF.

Professor Wang Gungwu, the former chairman of the board of trustees at the Yusof Ishak Institute (ISEAS), is honored for his 17-year employment at the institute through the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Program. During their fellowship at ISEAS, Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows (WGWVF) are expected to present their research findings at an internal seminar and contribute to ISEAS Perspective and ISEAS Fulcrum publications in their fields of study.

The ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore established the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Program in honor of Professor Wang Gungwu, the former chairman of its Board of Trustees, for his significant 17 years of contribution. Whenever feasible, fellows will be invited to meet with Professor Wang Gungwu during their fellowship. The ISEAS (Yusof Ishak Institute in Singapore) is offering the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship 2026, a fully funded two-month fellowship that aims to explore the relationship between major global power countries and their impact on Southeast Asia through policy research on regional economics, digital technology, and international politics and security in areas like US-China relations, the rise of China and its impact on Southeast Asian countries, the South China Sea, and China-ASEAN relations.

Financial Benefits:

  • Successful applicants for the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellows Program receive
    • round-trip economy travel between their home country and Singapore, as well as
    • a fixed monthly stipend (which includes a housing subsidy) for the duration of their fellowship at ISEAS.
  • During their fellowship, WGWVFs will, if feasible, be invited to meet with Professor Wang Gungwu.
  • Selected candidates will have access to the ISEAS Library, office space, computer hardware, IT services, and other ISEAS resources as needed.
  • Plans for complete or partial cost-sharing will also be taken into account.

Objectives:

The Fellowship seeks to encourage scholars to investigate how key world forces relate to and affect Southeast Asia, including:

  • Southeast Asia’s reaction to changes in US-China ties.
  • Security concerns in the Asia-Pacific region (such as the South China Sea and China-ASEAN relations)
  • Developments and prospects of regional and international economic cooperation programs (such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership and the Belt and Road Initiative)
  • China’s rise and its effects on communities in Southeast Asia
  • Countries’ use of technology and digital media to further their objectives and sway opinions in Southeast Asian nations.

Eligibility Criteria:

To be considered for the Wang Gungwu Visiting Fellowship 2025 in Singapore, you must fulfill these eligibility criteria:

  • All nationals are eligible to apply for the fully funded fellowship in Singapore.
  • Aimed at mid-career policymakers and post-doctoral scholars.
  • Policymakers in their mid-career who do not hold a PhD or a comparable degree are encouraged to apply.
  • In their CV or resume, candidates without a PhD should highlight relevant work experience and research interests.
