Opportunity Description
Established in 2021, the Wes Vernon Broadcast Scholarship honors veteran radio journalist and former National Press Club member Wes Vernon while promoting diversity in the broadcast journalism industry. In 2021, Mr. Vernon passed away.
All students will be taken into consideration, although those starting or already enrolled in a community college will be given priority. Any student pursuing an education in broadcast journalism is eligible for the award, regardless of age, whether they are a mid-career professional changing careers or an incoming freshman.
The scholarship was established by Mr. Vernon’s family in an effort to break down barriers for students from underrepresented backgrounds in broadcast journalism.

Benefits:
- The recipient of the scholarship, who exhibits a dedication to a career in broadcast journalism, will receive $5,000 per year.
- Up to three renewals of the award are possible, providing a total of $20,000 for tuition costs.
Eligibility Criteria:
In order to qualify, candidates must:
- Intend to go into broadcast journalism as a career.
- To apply for this scholarship, students do not need to be citizens of the United States.
- Any student seeking a broadcast journalism degree at any point in their career is eligible to apply for the award. The scholarship donor specifies that students who are enrolled in community colleges will be given preference.
- Be enrolled in, or in the process of applying to, a U.S. university or community college that has accredited a broadcast journalism program.
Documents Requirement:
An application that is complete includes:
- A brief elevator pitch: What piques your interest in journalism, and how have you pursued it thus far? (maximum of 150 words).
- A PDF of your most recent academic transcript.
- A 500-word essay (PDF) describing your interest in and commitment to working in broadcast journalism.
- Your resume (in PDF format).
- A description of your financial situation.
- Three to five work samples demonstrating your ability or interest in pursuing a career in broadcast journalism.
- Three letters of recommendation from teachers or professors, employers, group leaders, or other people who are most familiar with your work and work ethic.
Note: Published work, scripts for broadcast news stories, podcast clips, video news stories, other digital media, or other journalistic work samples are all acceptable as work samples. Audio or visual work samples should not exceed 4 minutes in length per clip.
