JOB DESCRIPTION

BACKGROUND
The United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa (the Center), established in Yaoundé, Cameroon, was created at the request of member countries of the Economic Community of Central African States ( ECCAS) and the decision of the UN General Assembly by resolutions of December 5, 1998 (53/78) and December 1, 1999 (54/55).

 

The Center is the Regional Office for Central Africa of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) with a mandate to promote and protect human rights and democracy in 10 Central African countries. (Burundi, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Central African Republic, Democratic Republic of Congo, Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe and Chad). In strategic and operational terms, the Center focuses on 6 priority countries, in this case those which have no OHCHR presence (Burundi, Cameroon, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Republic of Congo, Sao Tome and Principe), the opposite of countries where there is either a country office (Chad), a human rights advisor within the country team of the United Nations system (Rwanda) or a human rights component within a peacekeeping mission (CAR and DRC). The role of the Center in priority countries is to ensure the effectiveness of human rights and democracy through capacity building, advocacy, lobbying, dialogue, prevention of human rights violations. , monitoring of the human rights situation, technical assistance and advisory services provided to all human rights actors, including governments, parliaments, United Nations country teams, national institutions rights, civil society organizations and the media.

 

The Center offers two-month development scholarships renewable for a maximum of six months, intended for graduate students, young practitioners and human rights defenders with a diploma in a field related to the activities of the Center, in particular human rights ; genre ; the democracy ; documentation, communication / advocacy; and administration / finance. This call for applications concerns the gender component.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the direction of the Regional Representative of the United Nations Center for Human Rights and Democracy in Central Africa and the direct supervision of the Head of the Equality and Non-Discrimination Unit, the fellow will have to perform the tasks following:

 

  • Contribute to the collection and analysis of information on human rights and women’s rights in the countries covered by the Center;
  • Contribute to the preparation and implementation of the activities of the Center with a view to ensuring the integration of the specific issue related to women’s and gender rights;
  • Provide practical support in the organization of the Centre’s conferences, workshops or seminars relating to gender and women’s rights;
  • Support the search for training tools and techniques on the integration of the gender approach;
  • Provide support in the preparation of meetings with the Centre’s partners working in the field of gender and women’s rights;
  • Carry out in-depth research and analysis on the
    human rights and women’s rights situation in Central Africa;
  • Support research on the status of ratifications and implementation of conventions, protocols and other texts relating to human and gender rights;
  • Support the implementation of the recommendations of the CNUDHD-AC conferences, workshops or seminars relating to women’s rights and gender;
  • Support the participation of the CNUDHD-AC in the various activities organized by other structures;
  • Participate and ensure, as appropriate, the mainstreaming of the gender dimension in monitoring and reporting activities on the human rights situation in the countries covered; analyze trends and issues of women’s rights and make proposals for action to face emerging challenges;
  • Carry out any task allowing the proper functioning of the Center, at the request of the Regional Representative or the Head of the Equality in Non-Discrimination Unit.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE
Qualifications and experience

  • Minimum requirement: To be enrolled in a bachelor’s year or to have obtained (less than a year ago) a bachelor’s degree in law, human rights, political science or international relations, or in another related field; specialization in women’s rights and gender issues would be an asset;
  • Professional experience in human rights would be an asset;
  • Knowledge and / or interest in issues affecting generally marginalized groups;
  • Good writing, research, analysis and synthesis skills;
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and work under pressure;
  • Great adaptability and flexibility in the implementation of multiple and varied tasks;
  • Perfect oral and written command of French or English, and working knowledge of the other language;
  • Good computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet.
